The shores of the lake, and the western districts which I traversed, have been partially described only in the memoirs of Bruce, since whose voyages one hundred years have elapsed; but with remote and self-contained nations time efiects change with a gentle, slow-moving hand, and I found in most cases the habits and customs mentioned in his work reproduced with little perceptible variation.
